Kueny: Turkmenistan’s Transport, Green Energy Projects Align With EIB Priorities

27.03.2026

Turkmenistan’s plans to modernize transport infrastructure and develop renewable energy align with the priorities of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Olivier Kueny, head of the EIB’s Regional Representation for Central Asia, said in an interview with Trend.

Such initiatives reflect the EIB’s role as the EU’s “climate bank,” focused on supporting climate-resilient economies, Kueny said.

He added that, in practice, this means prioritizing financing for projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and promote the use of clean technologies.

The EIB follows European Union priorities under the Global Gateway initiative in Central Asia, including the development of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor (Middle Corridor), digital connectivity, clean energy and water management projects, as well as initiatives related to critical raw materials.

Kueny noted that, with access to the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan serves as a key link in the Middle Corridor. Strengthening rail and road infrastructure, upgrading rolling stock and modernizing port facilities could reduce transit times and costs between regions, contributing to trade expansion and economic growth.

The EIB also assesses the long-term sustainability of projects, focusing on transparent governance, environmental impact assessments and stakeholder engagement, aiming to ensure lasting economic benefits while maintaining environmental standards.
