Russia, Kyrgyzstan Discuss New Transport Route Via Turkmenistan

Russia and Kyrgyzstan have explored the possibility of establishing a new transport route for cargo shipments, which would pass through Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and the Caspian Sea, ultimately ending at the port of Astrakhan, according to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk.

As reported by Turkmenistan’s official media on Tuesday, this issue was raised during a meeting between Kyrgyzstan’s Prime Minister Akylbek Japarov and Russian representatives in Moscow.

The proposed route is intended to strengthen the integration of the “North-South” and “East-West” transport corridors, marking a significant step forward for regional logistics.

Deputy Prime Minister Overchuk noted that, at present, cargo between Russia and Kyrgyzstan is transported via Kazakhstan. However, the new route would provide alternative pathways.

In addition, discussions covered the construction of a road connecting the northern and southern regions of Kyrgyzstan, further enhancing the significance of the route for the regional transport network.

During the 11th meeting of the Russian-Kyrgyz Intergovernmental Commission in July 2024, Prime Minister Japarov expressed Kyrgyzstan’s hope for the swift opening of this new route, linking the country to Russia through the Caspian Sea.
